The construction of a £4.3 million innovative housing development in Radyr, Cardiff, parts of which are designed specifically for the needs of individuals with physical disabilities, will start this autumn.
Across the UK, there is a shortage of accessible housing, meaning that often disabled residents have to rely on carers in order to get in and out of their accommodation.
The new development will make life substantially easier for disabled residents, with many aspects of the bespoke development, being built by Hale Construction in partnership with Taff Housing Association, being wheelchair-friendly and designed specifically with the needs of disabled users in mind.
The designs of the development for 36 units on De Clare Drive in Radyr were approved in May 2018 – construction of the development is expected to take 62 weeks.
The development will comprise 18 one-bedroom apartments, 10 two-bedroom apartments and eight three-bedroom homes – four of which will be suitable for wheelchair users.
In addition to the challenges of finding wheelchair friendly accommodation, there is a shortage of affordable housing in South Wales and the Welsh government his committed to deliver 20,000 affordable homes in its current term, which ends in 2021. The development will also create local jobs, as well as several apprenticeships.
Elaine Ballard, chief executive of Taff Housing Association, said:
“It’s very pleasing to see this scheme getting underway, and we’re delighted to be working with Hale Construction again. These homes will be very much in demand, especially as we are including properties for people with physical disabilities. We will be keeping an eye on the progress and are looking forward to completion of our first project in the Radyr area next year.”
Jonathan Hale, chairman of JG Hale Group, said:
“We’re delighted once again to be working alongside Taff Housing Association to improve the lives of those needing support in our communities. As a company, we constantly strive to deliver projects that will successfully accommodate each specific individual – and with the planned growth of Hale Construction, we will be able to do so more and more.”
Steve Griffiths, business development manager at JG Hale Group, added:
“Our first commitment when we begin a development in a residential area, is to ensure that we minimise disruption as much as possible. We will be working with local groups and all aspects of the community to ensure everyone’s experience of the development is a positive one.”
JG Hale Construction was established in 1996 and is on course to become one of the largest construction companies in Wales. They are currently working in conjunction with a number of Welsh housing associations across the whole of South Wales creating different schemes to benefit local communities.
